CMET-Pune, bags Power award for developing next-gen batteries

The battery development team at the Pune-based Centre for Materials and Electronics Technology (CMET) has been presented the annul Power award for designing and developing the battery pack and module for next generation electric vehicles.

Milind Kulkarni, Centre Director, CMET, Pune, was presented this national award by the Power Producers Association of India (IPPAI) during the 26th Regulators and Policymakers meet held in Belgaum on last week.

The team has also indigenously developed rechargeable lithium-sodium (Li-Na) and flexible batteries using active materials, best suited for wearable electronics and gadgets. Besides, the centre has installed the entire battery fabrication and testing facility for the development of all multiple types of cells required for rechargeable batteries.

“Considering the future trends of flexible and wearable electronics devices and gadgets, C-MET has designed and developed flexible and bendable rechargeable batteries to power these devices,” said Kulkani.

For strategic purposes, the Pune battery team is currently engaged in the development of alternative chemistries of batteries, such as Potassium (K-ion) , Zinc (Zn-ion), Li-S, Li-Air as well as salt water batteries required for India’s defence sector.

Operating under the union Ministry of Electronics and IT, this Pune centre is working with startups and small and medium-scale industries towards scaling-up this technology first to pilot scale level and later to industrial scales.
