
SGCCI honorary secretary named
Pravin B Nanavati, a city businessman, has been appointed the honorary secretary of the Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry SGCCI for 1999-2000. According to a release issued here on Wednesday, Nanavati, who runs a plastic and diamond business, has been associated with the SGCCI as a managing committee member for the past many years. He has also served as the vice-president of the Surat Diamond Association SDA and the Surat District Cricket Association SDCA.
Free books
The Surat Shahar Yuva Congress will distribute free text books and notebooks to poor and slum children of municipal ward no 10 on Saturday. Ashok Pimple, president of the city Youth Congress, said the books will be distributed at 6 pm. A number of office-bearers and party workers will be present on the occasion.
Firing exercises
Additional district magistrate V D Asari, in an official directive issued here on Wednesday, has banned movement of civilians in and around the Sherula Firing Butt as SRP jawans will undertake firing exercises at the butt till June 30. Persons have been asked not to venture within 100 metres of the area or take their cattle for grazing there.
Career guidance
The Shantidham Education Trust will provide guidance to students on different courses, including CA, CS, ICWA, at a meeting at 6 pm on June 14 at the Vigneshwar Estate, Nanpura. Those who have cleared their higher secondary school examinations can take part.
Camp held
Vadodara: The West Zone office of the Central Pollution Control Board CPCB held a camp to check vehicular pollution as part of the World Environment Day celebrations on June 5. The CPCB engineers repaired more than 1,000 vehicles and also apprised vehicle owners of the dos and don8217;ts of vehicle maintenance. The camp, held at the petrol pump opposite Sarabhai Chemicals, checked the carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon level of vehicles, zonal officer S S Bala said.
