
Lightning kills fishermen
Three fishermen of Pal-Timbi village of Umargam taluka of Valsad district died on Tuesday when the boat, in which they were out fishing ,was struck by lightning. Another fisherman was also seriously injured in the incident, and is being treated at a hospital, the Umargaon police said.
All were residents of Kadhoria Falia of Pal-Timbi village on the Arabian Sea coast.
The Valsad district police control room said that a case has been registered in the Umargam police station. The dead have been identified as Kishore Naresh Maachhi, Mansinh Krishna Maachhi, and Dinesh Dahya Maachhi. The person injured has been identified as Popat Vitthal Maachhi.
The bodies of the three dead were cremated today in the village.
Barely a month ago, twelve Umargam residents had drowned in the Arabian Sea while immersing Ganesh idols.
More rains
The Met Department has forecast heavy rainfall in the next 24 hours in the city. District Collector Sangeeta Singh has directed all officials to remain in touch with the district flood control room. Meanwhile, Choryasi taluka of the district received the highest rainfall 34 mm in the last 24 hours. According to the rainfall recorded in various talukas of district, beginning 8 am on Wednesday, Uchchal received 12 mm, Palsana 1 mm, Bardoli 3 mm, Mangrol 10 mm, Songadh 3 mm and Surat city 31 mm of rain. Water-level in the Ukai dam rose to 343.47 feet, while it was 161.60 feet in Kakrapar and 113.45 metre in the Amli reservoir.
Minister8217;s visit
Minister of State for Fishery, Police and Housing Babubhai Khokhiriya will visit Ukai Circuit House, on October 15 at 4 pm, where he will meet leaders of various fishermen8217;s mandalis and officials. The minister will leave for Bharuch the next morning.
Safety meet
According to a statement issued by RTO K M Patel on Wednesday, a District Road Safety meeting will be held at the collectorate on October 16 at 4 pm, to discuss various aspects of road safety and measures to be taken.
