Sri Lanka8217;s Tamil Tigers commemorated their first suicide bomber with 8216;8216;Black Tiger Day8217;8217; on Monday, with ceremonies and speeches throughout the Tamil-majority North and East of the war-torn island. Despite a ceasefire holding since February 2002 in the 20-year civil war, the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam LTTE used the day to display commitment to their separatist cause and celebrate the 241 suicide bombers whose attacks have killed more than 1,000.
8216;8216;I felt sad and shocked but I felt proud that my son had courageously and voluntarily committed his life to the freedom of his people,8217;8217; said Kamaldevi Vallipuram, the mother of 8216;8216;Captain Miller8217;8217;, who drove a truck full of explosives into a Sri Lankan Army camp to become their first suicide bomber on July 5, 1987.
Miller has since been heralded as a martyr for the Tigers fight for a separate state for ethnic-minority Tamils and for paving the way for suicide bombers, known as Black Tigers, who brought terror to the country until the Norwegian-brokered truce.
President Chandrika Kumaratunga lost an eye to a 1999 suicide-bomb blast and attacks killed former president Ranasinghe Premadasa and former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi.
8216;8216;It is a useful dedication,8217;8217; the 64-year-old Vallipuram said of her son8217;s death. 8216;8216;I hate Prabhakaran. He killed my son,8217;8217; said another mother, referring to reclusive leader Velupillai Prabhakaran.
8216;8216;I8217;m not going to attend. For me it8217;s a show,8221; said the woman, who has a second son still in the rebel group. A motorcade flying the Tigers8217; red and yellow flags and displaying photographs of the bombers travelled through Jaffna peninsula on Monday. 8212;Reuters
