Justin Langer8217;s gritty innings and the occasional prodigious turn for leg-spinner Stuart MacGill must have the Australians optimistic that they can win the third Test and retain the Ashes for the fifth successive time since they were regained in 1989. As Langer pushed his way to his highest Test score the signs were ominous when off-spinner Peter Such started to turn the ball a bit early on the second day.

Such has made a big impression in the Adelaide Test. Apart from extracting reasonable turn from a good pitch, he8217;s been prepared to flight the ball and invite the drive and most importantly he8217;s bowled a good line just outside off-stump to the right-handers. It was one such ball that bowled MacGill, curving away a little and then turning back to clip the off bail 8212; an off-spinner8217;s dream delivery.

This is a big change from when I saw Such bowling in the 1993 Ashes series. Too often in that series he bowled at a middle and leg line to the right-handers and was easily worked away on the on-side for runs.Such is the nature of the game that it generally rewards the more attacking players.

In the morning, Ricky Ponting played like a troubled young batsman. Just as he did at the Gabba, Ponting was out at the Adelaide Oval trying to drive a ball that had risen above waist height a difficult shot against top class bowlers. On this occasion, it proved impossible as the outside edge from Darren Gough finished in second slip8217;s hands. Langer, on the other hand, showed his relief at scoring a century yesterday and came out in a relaxed frame of mind on the second day. He played shots right from the outset and never looked in any trouble even when wickets fell regularly at the other end and he had to take more chances. One of the impressive things about Langer8217;s batting was the secure way he played the ball around off-stump. Generally, left-handers tend to nibble in that region but he covered every delivery well and forced many through the off-side field. His position is now as secure as Ponting8217;s isdoubtful.
