The Chhattisgarh government has been asked by the Centre to submit, within a month, an 8216;8216;updated action plan8217;8217; to deal with the situation in the state in the wake of increasing attacks by Left wing extremists on Salwa Judum activists.

The decision on the action plan that would include short-term and long- term measures, was taken at a high-level meeting chaired by Home Minister Shivraj Patil and attended by Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh, National Security Advisor M K Narayanan and other senior officials.

The short-term measures will focus on revamping security and providing basic amenities in the camps where around 50,000 Salwa Judum activists are lodged. A Naxalite raid on Errabore camp had resulted in the death of 31 activists. The long-term strategy will evaluate the future role and objectives of the movement besides spelling out the assistance needed to curb the Naxal movement.

Later, Raman Singh said the problem had been accentuated as Dantewada was located close to Andhra Pradesh and Orissa. 8216;8216;Naxalites are desperate and we need to strengthen our forces. A joint action plan by the states should be given priority,8217;8217; he said, even as he ruled out putting an end to the Salwa Judum since it had the support of people.
