Students across the country display models at CBSE national science meet

Young Scientists of India presented their models 8220;for the future8221; at the 5th CBSE National Level Science Exhibition on Saturday.

Hosted by Springdales School, Pusa Road the exhibition saw the participation of 178 schools from across the country, chosen for the best display in their respective regions by the CBSE.

The themes for the competition include water management, disaster management, energy, food and agriculture, mathematical modelling and educational aides. The 20 best exhibits will receive awards from the CBSE.

8220;This kind of exposure helps develop a scientific temper among school students because they have to do a lot of research to develop their ideas,8221; Himanshu Agrawal, of Lovedale School in Satna, Madhya Pradesh, said.

His student prepared a model on the application of genetic engineering technology to develop high-nutrition, low-priced foods.

The models on display ranged from dome shaped earthquake resistant buildings to biotechnology experiments carried out by the students themselves.

A particularly interesting exhibit revolved around using chemicals derived from moss to fight food contamination.

A competition on this scale is also an opportunity to interact with like-minded students from across the country and to learn from their work.

8220;We get to meet so many new people and see what others are doing in different fields,8221; Priya Sehgal of Springdale Secondary School, Ludhiana, said.

She displayed a model on better methods of irrigation to save water.

Amita M Wattal, principal of the host school, emphasised the importance of holding such competitions as an outlet for creativity. 8220;This is a brilliant way to make sure that children imbibe what they are learning,8217; she said, adding, 8220;At a time when people source information from the Internet, this encourages thorough research and logical thinking.8221;

A K Rath, Secretary of Department of School Education, MHRD, inaugurated the exhibition, which is open till Sunday evening.
