Strike over, Jammu returns to normal

After suspension of the nine-day-long bandh in Jammu, life returned to normal in the city on Wednesday.

Vehicular traffic that had been off the roads due to the agitation rolled on normally even as people returned to their offices. Banks and ATMs witnessed huge rushes as people had to withdraw money for making purchases. All business establishments and commercial units opened, doing brisk business. People were making purchases in large quantities, especially of essential commodities. However most educational institutions remained closed. Reports from other districts like Kathua, Samba, Rajouri stated that people were returning to their normal routines.

The Amarnath Yatra Sangarsh Samiti suspended the bandh on Tuesday 8220;in the interest of the people of Jammu8221; and gave seven days time to the government to revoke the order. The Samiti has maintained that they will continue their agitation for the removal of Governor N N Vohra and the return of land to Shri Amarnath Shrine Board SASB.

Meanwhile, Bar Association of Jammu BAJ, that has decided to continue its strike till Saturday, took out a rally demanding transfer of land back to SASB on Wednesday. Hundreds of lawyers first assembled at High Court premises and showed their resentment against the decision of the Azad government to cancel the land diversion order. Later the protesters took out a car rally, which after passing through various parts of the city, culminated in front of the Governor8217;s residence.
