MUMBAI, February 4: Making a mockery of all pre-race speculations, Storm Again, a four-year-old colt by Alnasr Alwasheek out of Perchance to Dream, ran away with McDowell Indian Derby honours edging out overwhelming favourite Allaire by three-and-a-quarter of lenght at the wire at the Mahalaxmi Race Course here on Sunday.

Friendless and available at 6/1 in the bookmakers ring, Storm Again was the dark horse and nobody except for his trainer Jaggy Dhariwal and jockey Pesi Shroff could have imagined that he will put best foot forward on Sunday. finally big race temprament of Shroff counted and as managed to land the spoils.

Stone Ridge set the tune of the pace leisurely followed by Inquisition, Altimara, Perceived Value, Mosaic and Storm Again while the rest were left behind with Allaire lying in the rear bunch. They ran almost in a similar file till the 600 metre marker with both Storm Again and Allaire making steady progress.

Stone Ridge brought the field into view from stands closely followed by Inquisition and Perceived Value while Storm Again and Allaire were in the mid bunch, each waiting for the other to make final bid. Nearing 400 metres, the moment Shroff gave Storm Again a crack reminding of the task ahead, he galloped to race like a bullet. Allaire too made its effort challenging Storm Again but soon the daughter of Razeen realised that she was up against a hopeless task as Storm Again went well out of reach.

Perhaps a slight error of judgement in striking at the right time by Aslam Kader dashed all hopes of Allaire.

The supporting event of the day, The Breeders’ Produce Stakes, also saw lesser fancied Memories Of You winning from pillar to post.

Memories of You took a fly jump and led the field all along. Jockey C Rajendra extracted that extra bit left in his mount in the last part to stave off the late challenges of fast finishing Snow Dew and Wild Eagle.
