Conman held for duping railway passenger

CHENNAI: A conman, who posed as a travelling ticket examiner TTE was arrested on Wednesday due to alert railway staff of Chennai Central station after he had conned one Jerald D8217;Souza into parting with his wait-listed ticket. The TTE8217; was nabbed by vigilance squad when he approached the refund counter at Egmore railway station with Jerald8217;s ticket. Two more persons were cheated by the conman earlier, a railway press release said.

Five jailbirds scale wall, flee

NAWADA: Five undertrial prisoners charged with crimes ranging from murder, loot and dacoity escaped from Nawada district jail after scaling the wall on Tuesday night, the police said. A case was lodged with the Nawada Town police station by jail superintendent on Wednesday morning. District SP Vimlesh Sinha did not rule out complicity of jail staff in the escape.

PANAJI: Gomantak Marathi Academy president Prof Gopalrao Mayekar, has launched anEnglish web-site http/bhagvadgita.indianet.org on the internet to coincide with Janmashtami8217;, the auspicious day of the birth anniversary of Lord Krishna, falling on September 2. The aim is to bring out a computer disc on Gita text along with a book with commentary, meaningful graphics, illustrations and audio visual effects, Mayekar told. The simplified rendering and comments are given by him and graphics and illustrations are by artist, Prof MaheshVengurlekar of Goa College of Art, Prof Mayekar said.

Bus mishap: 8 killed, 32 injured

SURAT: Eight persons including three children were killed and 32 others injured when a Gujarat state bus collided with a speeding trailer on the Surat-Dhulia highway near Vyara in the district on Tuesday evening. Police sources said here on Wednesday that the injured have been admitted at Vyara Janak Hospital. The deceased were identified as M K Patel 35, B K Desai 45, G B Qureshi 33, Sahidabibi Qureshi 25, Hanif Shaikh 25, M V Desai two, S A Mayawadi12 and M N Qureshi 4.

Derailment disrupts traffic in MP

RAIGARH MP: Rail traffic on the Howrah-Mumbai route was affected when five bogies of a goods train derailed near Champa station under Bilaspur zone on Tuesday evening. Traffic remained paralysed for nearly ten hours after the bogies of the cement laden goods train went off the track, Railway sources said. While the Tatanagar-Agpur passenger train had been cancelled, several long distance trains were running late by several hours.

MPEB engineer8217;s properties raided

JABALPUR: The special police establishment of Madhya Pradesh Lokayukta raided the house of a chief engineer CE of the electricity board MPEB and seized unnamed property, cash and jewellery worth Rs 70 lakh. The Lokayukta police team simultaneously raided the residence of M Moinuzuddin at Jabalpur and a hotel-cum-resort situated at Kanha tourist place in Mandla district.
