November 24: After the fiasco with the previous Sena-BJP government, the Congress-led state government has indefinitely stayed the implementation of the Pre-School Centres Regulation of Admission Act, 1996. Announcing the postponement today, Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh said the legal aspects are being examined.

The implementation of the act had been stayed through an ordinance on July 2, 1998. In fact, ever since the legislation was enacted in 1997, the act has remained in limbo. It was strongly opposed by the minority school managements as it allegedly did not provide rights to minorities in the admission procedure. Most Sena and BJP MLAs had also opposed its implementation.
