Mumbai, November 24: The state government today stayed the implementation of the Pre-School Regulation of Admission Act, 1996, till a further decision is taken. Announcing this at a press conference today, Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh said the legal aspects of the issue are being examined.

The implementation of the Act had been stayed for the academic year 1998-99 through an ordinance passed on July 2, 1998. In fact, ever since it was introduced in 1997, the Act has remained in limbo. It was strongly opposed by the minority school managements as it allegedly did not provide rights to minorities in the admission procedure. The then ruling Sena-BJP MLAs were also unhappy as they felt the Act would restrict their powers to recommend students to schools.
