VADODARA, Aug 25: The field work has not been reduced, the number of assignments to be done during the year have also not decreased, but the number of hours teachers spend with students has decreased, thus affecting the quality of education imparted. These are some common complaints of the 120-odd students of the M S University8217;s Faculty of Social Work.
The faculty, entitled for 70 teaching posts, has been working with 12 teachers from the last three years. The government has not sanctioned recruitment for the vacant posts till now.
8220;For our field work and assignments we have to spend a lot of time with our teachers to discuss the project, but this is difficult at the moment,8221; said a final year student of the faculty. Another student pointed out that for paper presentations during seminars and conferences, the teachers set a pattern and helped the students with references, but they themselves were too busy as they had to handle not only extra classes but other works of the faculty too, hence their time was being divided.
During the year the students have field placements where they adopt villages or other areas, on which a project report has to be submitted. There are also conferences and seminars which have to be looked into. 8220;Before submitting a paper, there have to be discussions on how the paper has to be planned and submitted,8221; said another student, adding that all that was being rushed through.
8220;Yes, we do realise that students are not getting the amount of attention they require,8221; says Dean of the Faculty Anil Navle. Navle admits that the shortage is affecting the quality of education.
He adds that the teachers are overburdened.8220;Nothing can happen till the elections were over, and there is no assurance whether things would improve after that, thus the students have to continue suffering,8221; he says.
