CHANDIGARH, Oct 1: Heavy rain and high velocity winds lashed the City late last night. The wind clocked at 50 km/hour brought down telephone and electricity poles and uprooted trees in several localities.

The City recorded 22 mm of rainfall and the minimum temperature dropped to 20.8 degrees Celsius which is 3.6 degrees below normal. Officials of the Meteorological Department clarified that the rain last night was not part of the monsoon. The monsoon, they added, withdrew from the region on September 28.

According to the officials, the squall was the result of an upper air draft headed from north Pakistan to central Rajasthan. The forecast, however, states that while there is the possibility of some more rain, day and night temperatures are unlikely to vary much from what is normal for this time of the year.

The aftermath of the squall disrupted traffic in the Industrial Area. Power supply to several of the southern sectors, especially 41, 44, 46 and 47, was affected and telephone services were disrupted. Residents of these sectors said the power supply remained disrupted till 2 in the afternoon. Last night around 1 a.m., power supply to most parts of the City was shut down for around half-an-hour as the department feared damage to supply lines.

Meteorological Department officials added that rain in October is not abnormal. Last year was a case in point with the City registering 104 mm of rain, 41.6 mm of which was recorded on a single day 8212; October 29.
