8226; Apropos of 8216;If this is Day One, if this is cricket, just bring it on8217; IE, March 14, the outcome of the first one-dayer is much more than merely a victory or defeat of the two teams. Belying all fears of the worst kind, Indo-Pak cricket was brought out of its 14-year-long banishment by the commendably disciplined and sporting Karachi audience equally applauding both the teams for the superb cricket they played. With each team putting a massive total of almost 350 runs and putting everybody8217;s breath on hold till the final delivery was bowled and played, it was the greatest excitement any limited over match can provide. A remarkable day in the history of cricket and Indo-Pak relations!

8226; Congratulations to Ganguly and company for this great win. But please note that Pakistan fought very well to come so near the winning post. For a moment please imagine that had Pakistan set such a target for India to score 350 runs, India would have crumbled like a pack of cards. However, a win is always a win,

8226; Having read three leading national newspapers on Monday, I can easily say that Chandresh Narayanan8217;s reports are the best written. This is the kind of reporting that a cricket fan far away from the field wants, it makes us feel that we are there with the team. Great job.

Man, not machine

8226; This refers to Kavita Gadgil8217;s article IE, March 5. I would like to express my views about the so called 8220;techy8221; who is the easiest person to blame in case of any mishap. As a bereaved mother, Gadgil has every right to question the various aspects involved in the accident of an aircraft which claimed her son8217;s life. Contrary to her belief, technicians are an ill-fated ilk, always bearing the brunt of investigations of every accident/incident.
I think an outsider must know about the kind of professional life the so-called 8220;techies8221; lead in the present day8217;s air force. A technician is utilised primarily in areas where no technical expertise is needed. It is the misuse of technical manpower, knowledge and skill and not the ageing machines, which still fly elsewhere, that affects flight safety. Before boasting about hi-tech equipment, the authorities should ensure that the self-esteem of the men behind them is not put at stake.

The K obsession

8226; It was too hasty for India to accept and believe that Pervez Musharraf was on the track towards peace with India. For Musharraf has not given up his dream of nabbing Kashmir from India. If the general doesn8217;t get his way, there is an indirect threat to India: 8220;Things would slide back to square one.8221;
