Memory Jog- T C YOHANNAN
Way before the starburst of Anju Bobby George, TC Yohannan reigned supreme over the long jump pit. The first Indian to break the 8-metre barrier, he held the national record of 8.07 metres for three decades following his gold-winning effort at the Teheran Asian Games in 1974. For the next couple of years it seemed he could do no wrong as he soared from one high to the next. But fate had other plans; a serious knee injury just before the 1978 Bangkok Asiad ended his career.

Life after jumping hasn8217;t been the same; Yohannan has spent a couple of years in a wheelchair and limps even today. The good news has been his son Tinu, a sometime cricket for India. Today Yohannan senior leads a contented life near Thiruvananthapuram, happy that Amritpal Singh has broken his record and confident there8217;ll be more in the future.
