
NEW DELHI, DEC 15: The group on telecom GoT on Tuesday has decided to set up a spectrum committee to suggest ways for long-term spectrum management and thus facilitate the entry of more players into the sector.
The spectrum committee shall comprise wireless adviser to the government, R N Agarwal, joint commander electronics services, ministry of defence, Lt Gen Gokharan and National Informatics Centre NIC director general N Seshagiri.
It was pointed out that various public sector units like Indian Oil Corporation IOC, Oil and Natural Gas Company etc, were occupying various segments of spectrum but were not utilising them optimally. The spectrum committee would go into these issues and try to suggest ways for optimal utilisation of the spectrum by telecom operators and other users. It will also deal with issues concerning credible registration, tele-density and rural area network.
Briefing newsmen about the GoT, which met under the chairman of deputy chairman of the Planning Commission JaswantSingh, secretary in prime minister8217;s office PMO N K Singh reiterated that the GoT would sort out the problems relating to the telecom licence fee by December 31. The new telecom policy, he hoped, would be ready by February 8212; the deadline set by the prime minister.
The meeting, it was learnt, discussed the contentious issue of telecom licence fee but failed to arrive at any conclusion. The GoT, as per the dictates of the prime minister was bound to sort out the issue by December 31.
Referring to the issue of restructuring of the TRAI, Singh said that it would be in tandem with the new telecom policy being worked out by the GoT.
