CHENNAI, Nov 20: Union Petroleum Minister and Tamizhaga Rajiv Congress (TRC) leader Vazhapadi K Ramamurthy today said Sonia Gandhi’s election as AICC president had not made any difference to the Congress.
In an apparent warning to the AIADMK, in view of reports that it is getting closer to the Congress, the TRC leader said, while addressing his party’s first State-level delegates’ conference in the city, the Congress has gained a mere two per cent votes in Tamil Nadu in the last Lok Sabha elections.
In a pointed reference, he added that it was the AIADMK which has allayed misgivings of its allies — the MDMK, PMK, TRC and the Janata Party — while forging an alliance with the BJP. However, he reiterated that the TRC would remain with the AIADMK. “The people want us to be with the AIADMK,” he added.
A resolution to this effect was also passed at the meeting. “As far as the TRC is concerned, its relations with the AIADMK is smooth and there are no conflicts. The TRC-AIADMK alliance continues. There isno change in this stand.”
The resolution, however, reiterated that the TRC will continue to support the BJP for its full five-year term, even while faulting the opportunistic’ attempts of the Left parties in joining hands with the Congress to forge a third front in order to pull down the BJP Government.
Ridiculing reports that the CPM general secretary Harkishen Singh Surjit had met TMC leader G K Moopanar towards forging a third front, the resolution recalled that the Left parties had launched a land grab’ movement against Moopanar some years ago.
“Also, if Chief Minister M Karunanidhi – who is of the view that a duly elected Government should complete its full term) – is a true democrat, then he should not involve himself in attempts to pull down the BJP Government,” the resolution said. Another resolution urged the Centre to dismiss the DMK government, stating that there is enough evidence of constitutional breakdown and failure on the law and order front.
