The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved two railway projects worth approximately Rs 2,781 crore on Wednesday including building the third and fourth lines beween Badlapur and Karjat in Mumbai.
The Badlapur–Karjat project, costing Rs 1,324 crore, will be executed on a 50:50 cost-sharing basis between Indian Railways and the Government of Maharashtra.
The 32-km stretch forms part of the Mumbai–Chennai high-density network and serves as a critical link between western and southern India. It is also a major corridor for Mumbai’s suburban railway network, expected to ease congestion on the saturated Kalyan–Karjat route.
The section includes eight major bridges, 106 minor bridges, one road underbridge and six stations.
According to the Railway Ministry, the additional tracks will allow the introduction of more suburban, passenger and freight services while addressing long-standing capacity constraints in a region experiencing rapid industrial expansion.
According to the Railway Ministry, the project is expected to benefit daily commuters on the suburban network as well as intercity travellers between Mumbai and Pune. Railways estimate an additional freight potential of 7.2 million tonnes per year after completion.
Increased capacity and improved operational efficiency are also projected to reduce diesel consumption by 41 lakh litres annually, resulting in logistics cost savings of Rs 46.2 crore per year. The ministry further estimates a reduction of 2 crore kg of carbon dioxide emissions annually, equivalent to planting around eight lakh trees.
The CCEA also approved the doubling of the 141-km Kanalus–Okha (Devbhumi Dwarka) section in Gujarat. The project is expected to improve connectivity to the Dwarkadhish Temple and support the economic and tourism-linked development of the Saurashtra region.
Both projects have been planned under the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan.
