
MUMBAI, May 14: Young upstarts Sonal Phadke and Radhika Tulpule set up a semi-final meeting with established stars Uzma Khan and Janaki Krishnamurthy in the Rs 1,00,000 All-India Prize Money women8217;s tennis tournament today.
Phadke and Tulpule, both 16, won their matches in contrasting styles, Phadke blowing Sonia Shelar off the court while Tulpule fought off a stiff challenge from third seed Aparna Srinivasan.
Pune girl Tulpule, playing in her first senior tournament, was kept on court for an hour and 35 minutes before settling the issue 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 at the Shivaji Park Gymkhana courts. The country8217;s No 1 under-16 player then rushed to Bombay Gymkhana where she is playing the Maharashtra State Ranking junior tournament in both under-16 and under-18 categories.
Joining her in the semis and also playing both tournaments is Sonal Phadke. Sonal, who has written her SSC exams, demolished Shelar 6-1, 6-1 in just 43 minutes in a match during which Shelar could hold her serve only once.
Facing Phadke in thesemis will be the No 1 seed Uzma Khan who shrugged off initial trouble against Ahmedabad girl Karishma Patel to win 6-3, 6-1 in little over an hour. Patel, with a break in the first game, was up 3-1 before the Hyderabad girl swung things around. A break each in the sixth and eighth games did the trick for Khan.
The last semi-final slot was filled by Krishnamurthy, despite three double faults, against an erratic Juthika Choksi, winning 6-2, 6-3 in just 28 minutes. She faces Tulpule tomorrow.
