The article, 8216;Why is this a very happy Diwali? Top answer is reforms8217; IE, October 22 was interesting. However, I do not agree with the assumption that the success of software exports was due to the lowering of the price of telecom connectivity. I have been in the software field for 15 years and have been working in US for the last 10. Software exports has noting to do with lower telecom prices. Even when such prices were high, there was a decent level of software exports from India.
So what are the reasons? For the past 15 years, many Indian engineers started working in the US in the software field. Their achievements made people realise the software potential available in India. This was an important reason for US companies choosing to outsource to India. Also, as Indians assumed higher positions in US companies, they were able to take decisions about outsourcing to this country and some of them even started their own companies in India, using the contacts they had established in the US to get projects. Of course, the lower price in India played an important role. But this success really had nothing to do with government reforms.

The article, 8216;Why is this a very happy Diwali? Top answer is reforms8217; is well written and supported by facts, detailing the steps taken to change systems in ports, stock market and highway contracting. My question is, why do our honourable MPs not discuss such crucial steps to be taken instead of each party taking either a pro-reform or anti-reform stance and attacking each other.

China8217;s border
Regarding the story, 8216;Beijing comes to Delhi today to put history behind on the Chinese8217; IE, October 22, I believe the international border stops at the Great Wall of China. This is a historical fact which will enable India to negotiate from a position of strength.

Read Bush8217;s lips
Apropos 8216;The general in the jig-saw8217; IE, October 22, J.N. Dixit rightly observes that the US policy is to patronise those leaders and regimes in Muslim countries who are inclined to support US plans. Musharraf is one of that lot and it has amply been proved that we have all along been making a big fool of ourselves by going overboard on the post 9/11 US declaration of 8220;war against terror8221;. Pakistan is presently the epicentre of world terrorism, including that being exported to Kashmir and other parts of India. Yet, the manner US President Bush continues to praise him should leave us in no doubt about the real situation.

Think local
It has been observed that the leaders 8212; whether they are from the VHP or the Babri Masjid Action Committee 8212; are always bent upon pursuing their own ends. They have never realised the miserable condition of the poor people of Ayodhya nor have sought their views on the matter. Even the media never comes to their rescue and prefers to focus on those hell bent on creating trouble in the region. The time has come for something to be done to the poor people of Ayodhya itself, as they have been constantly victimised by selfish leaders out to get a public profile for themselves.
