MUMBAI, OCT 14: Smoking can result in the amputation of lower limbs and cerebral strokes beginning from the late twenties said Samin K Sharma at the world8217;s first congress being held in the city.
Dr Sharma, director of Cathedral Laboratory and Intervention cardiology, at the Mount Sinai Medical Centre in New York opined that nicotine in cigarettes changes fat composition which leads to deposition in the arteries. This causes constriction and at the same time quickens heart beat resulting in high blood pressure.
A blockage in any one of the two femoral arteries supplying blood to the lower limbs results in reduced blood supply to the lower limbs which coukld result in amputation.
8221;There needs to be a mass awareness which should go down to the community level8221;, Dr Sharma said.
