SOLAPUR, April 26: The Solapur Municipal Corporation recently approved a Rs 125.26 crore water distribution network plan for the city and its outskirts.

Prepared by Maharashtra Jeevan Pradhikaran (MJP), the plan catering to certain locations in the city which hitherto remained out of the existing water distribution network envisages new storage tanks at various places. At present there are only 18 storage tanks catering to the growing water needs of the sprawling city. According to the MJP report, the newly extended areas will require 13 storage tanks while the old city needs 17 additional tanks to achieve adequate supply at desired pressure.

Under the new plan every fringe village, now within the SMC limits, would get a storage tank while the report presses for an additional 400 km water pipeline in and around the city.

If the plan proposed by MJP and accepted by the SMC gets implemented then, the hard process of water lifting by pumps at various centre can be avoided in future. The project will be implemented in two phases.

The first phase of Rs 47 crore will be for the extended areas of the city which has been approved by the State Government while the remaining Rs 77 crore project will be for the city only.
