AHMEDABAD, JANUARY 11: With two days still to go and 288 needed to avoid a follow-on, Gujarat are in an unenviable position. Their remaining batsmen will have to bat with the same tenacity that openers Amrish Kotecha and Mihir Sheth displayed in the last session.
Resuming at 288 for 2, Shantanu Sugwekar, overnight 110, perished soon, his uppish drive off Hitesh Majmudar carrying to Vijay Patel at mid-off. Kale, making his debut as skipper, continued to lambast the Gujarat attack and completed his double century just before lunch. After reaching the landmark, in a bid to increase the tempo so as to be able to effect a declaration, he took one risk too many.
He was reprieved once on 215 as a full-blooded straight drive crashed into bowler Amrish Kotecha8217;s hand and popped out, but four runs later, Kevin Desai made no mistake at deep mid-wicket, latching on to a lofted sweep off the same bowler.
