PUNE, Dec 1: The Pune police carried out raids at six Desk Top Publishing DTP centres and nabbed six persons on charges of using pirated versions of the Shri-Lipi software in the last week. Computer systems and servers, the total worth of which is estimated at about Rs 11 lakh, were seized during the raids.

Police said separate raids were carried out on various DTP centres at Bhosari, Pimpri, Chinchwad and Deccan Gymkhana between November 23 and November 27.

The action was taken by the crime branch sleuths as well as officials from Deccan Gymkhana and Bhosari police stations after officials from the anti-piracy cell of Modular Systems, the company which has developed the Shri-Lipi software, approached the police complaining that the DTP centres were using pirated versions of the programme. The owners of these DTP centres have been charged under section 63 B of the Copyright Act of 1957, according to the police.

Col B F Chaudhari, chief executive, anti-piracy operations of the Modular Systems said the company8217;s anti-piracy cell has carried out raids on more than 150 DTP outlets in four states using pirated versions of Shri-Lipi software ever since it was established in May 1998. He said Modular Systems was the only Indian company to set up its own anti-piracy cell to combat software piracy. The company was planning to organise a seminar for police officials in Pune in February to increase their ability to deal with software piracy, he added.
