VARANASI, APRIL 20: Barring a stray incident in which some youths attempted to damage a place of worship, the overall law and order situation in the five curfew bound areas here continued to remain "tense", but "under control", with security forces maintaining a strict vigil.
Some youths forcibly entered a place of worship in the cantonment area of the city last night and damaged a small portion of the wall and window panes, District Magistrate Alok Kumar said here.
People of the other community gathered there and shouted slogans against the Government, he said, adding they were, however, persuaded and dispersed. Two platoons of police and PAC were deployed outside the place of worship, Kumar said.
Meanwhile, no fresh untoward incident has been reported from the curfew-bound areas under Chetganj, Luxa, Dashassumer Ghat, Chowk and Bhelupura police stations, the district magistrate said.
Asserting that there would be no relaxation in curfew, Kumar said arrangements were being made for adequate supply of medicines and other essential commodities in the curfew-bound areas. A medical camp would also be organised there, he said.
Following the order of the district inspectors of school postponing the on-going high school and intermediate examinations in the curfew-bound areas, the Banaras Hindu University and Kashi Vidyapeeth also postponed the examinations which were scheduled to begin from yesterday.
Meanwhile, a magisterial inquiry has been ordered into the violent clashes which left one person dead and six others injured since Monday.
Altogether 60 persons have so far been rounded up and additional forces, including 11 companies of PAC and three companies of rapid action force, have been deployed in the sensitive areas of the city to maintain law and order.
