At a time when the Tata pullout from Bengal looks imminent and the talks between the Left Front government and the Trinamool Congress-led agitators are deadlocked, two guards of a private security agency appointed by Tata Motors to guard its Nano factory at Singur were assaulted by a group of miscreants late Monday night.

Hit on the head with iron rods, one of the guards, Ajit Kumar, is reported to be serious and has been admitted to a private nursing home. The other guard, S N Sarkar, was discharged after treatment at the Singur block hospital. The police are yet to make any arrests.

The incident occurred inside the Nano plant at Singur, which is guarded round-the-clock by 600 private security guards appointed by the Tatas and almost an equal number of policemen posted by the state government.

Meanwhile, reports confirmed that the Tatas continued to move machinery and equipment out of the Singur plant, clearly indicating their preparedness to bring out the Nano from its facility outside Bengal, at Pantnagar or Pune.

8220;We are all scared after the incident, but since we have to feed our families we cannot leave Singur. We do not know why they are targeting us. We are all risking our lives for the Rs 2,500 that we take home as salary,8221; said Raju Kumar, a private guard manning a factory gate of the Tata plant.

Left Front chairman Biman Bose blamed the Trinamool Congress. 8220;In public, the Trinamool Congress claims it wants peaceful satyagraha, but in practice it is thwarting work at the plant. Last night8217;s attack proves it does not want the state to develop,8221; he said in a press statement.

But Trinamool leader Partha Chatterjee denied the allegations.
