
BANGALORE, June 8: Perhaps for the first time in any national-level badminton competition, all top players will sport black badges as a mark of protest during the semi-final matches of the National Games event tomorrow.
In the first executive meeting after its formation, the Indian Badminton Players8217; Welfare Association IBPWA today decided that all players and association members will sport badges to protest against the treatment meted out to the Uttar Pradesh players in the Games.
IBPWA secretary Vimal Kumar said the players were ready to participate in the tournament on their own expense, but were denied entry by the Badminton Association of India BAI.
The IBPWA has also decided to hold an all-India prize money tournament in Bangalore. When asked about BAI8217;s plan to introduce a fine of Rs 500 on players not participating in major tournaments despite giving entries, the IBPWA general secretary said the association will decide about this only after the said rule comes into force. 8220;The IBPWA has been formed not for confronting or threatening BAI, but to change the attitude of the game8217;s supreme body ,8221; he said.
Meanwhile, BAI secretary L C Gupta said there was no point in reviving the association. 8220;The BAI is functioning smoothly. Players are part of our family and disputes can be sorted out.8221;
