With the CPIM backing off from its move8212;along with the BJP8212;to adopt a 8216;8216;sense of the House8217;8217; resolution on the Indo-US nuclear deal, the UPA government agreed to have a 8220;short-duration discussion8221; on the issue in the Rajya Sabha next week.
This was decided at the Business Advisory Committee meeting of the Rajya Sabha today. The format and date of the discussion will be finalised by tomorrow morning depending on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh8217;s schedule.
Government sources said that the Prime Minister8217;s reply would 8220;wrap up8221; the discussion.
Senior CPIM leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sitaram Yechury said that his party has already given a notice for discussion. It has been admitted and Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Suresh Pachouri is coordinating to decide on the date.
The BAC meeting was attended by, among others, Pachouri, Yechury, BJP8217;s S S Ahluwalia, Samajwadi Party8217;s Amar Singh and RJD8217;s Ram Deo Bhandari.
Commenting on the decision to drop the resolution move, Left MPs said that 8216;8216;our only intention was to put it across that issues relating to national security will not be compromised8217;8217; through any international deal.
The government agreed to a discussion after the Prime Minister, keen to ensure that he does not have to carry the burden of a divided House to the negotiating table, was assured that 8216;8216;there won8217;t be any bone-picking8217;8217;.
In fact, the PM made it clear to CPI MP Gurudas Dasgupta yesterday that the government cannot be sustained if the Left decides to bring a resolution with the BJP even as the CPI leader pointed out that his party won8217;t back the BJP on any issue.
