It was just four days back when this reporter met Rohit Sharma and asked him about his preparations for the fitness camp in Bangalore, the 20-year-old had replied that had no idea what to expect there as he had never attended an Indian seniors camp before.
However, with the news breaking today that he had been included in the India one-day squad that will tour Ireland later this month, the Mumbai boy will soon be sharing the dressing room with India8217;s greats.
Lady Luck seems to be smiling at the aggressive middle-order bat after he bought a new house in the suburbs of the city about a month back. And today, the house was decorated and fire-crackers was burst in celebration. His father Gurunath Sharma was busy receiving congratulatory phone calls.
When contacted, Sharma, who was in Bangalore attending the fitness camp, was speechless at first. He then said: 8220;Of course, I8217;m delighted. This time around, the selection was not in my mind. Usually I do worry a little bit before the selection of the Indian team, but today I don8217;t know why I wasn8217;t thinking about it.8221;
For Sharma, the wait to wear a India cap has not been long. He had represented India A in the Abu Dhabi and Top End series in Australia last year. And now after playing Ranji Trophy for just one season, he has got a call up for India.
8220;I know I have to work harder,8221; he said. 8220;Finally, my dream has come true. I never thought that he would be selected for this tour.8221;
Dinesh Lad, his school coach, who lives in the same building and has been his mentor, said: 8220;I don8217;t have words to express my feeling. I think this is one of my biggest achievements. Rohit is a gifted player and the best part is he has a lot of luck.8221;
