ISLAMABAD, OCT 19: Deposed Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, unseen since the army took over a week ago, will stay in 8220;protective custody8221; while the military investigates corrupt practices and the high-altitude drama involving the army chief, a military spokesman said on Tuesday.

Although it is not known where Sharif is being held, Brig Rashid Qureshi assured that the ousted prime minister is in 8220;good health.8221; Press reports said on Tuesday that Sharif was in Attock Fort, which conflicted with earlier reports that the prime minister was in his hometown, Lahore.

Local papers had speculated that Sharif was 8220;drowsy8221; when interrogated by army officials earlier this week. 8220;No one has been ill-treated at all,8221; Qureshi said.

Local papers disclosed on Tuesday that numerous Indian movies, a movie of Saddam Hussain and Adolph Hitler and other matters had been recovered from Sharif8217;s room at the PM8217;s house in Islamabad.

He also said it will likely be another week before Army Chief Gen. Pervez Musharraf isready to announce the six-member National Security Council of army officers and civilians who will govern the country.

All eyes are now on Musharraf8217;s choice of ministers. 8220;Each decision that is taken is going to be well deliberated, well-studied because if that amount of effort doesn8217;t go into the initial stages it is likely to go wrong,8221; he said.

However, Quereshi said an investigation has already begun into the circumstances surrounding the October 12 drama at Karachi Airport, when the aircraft returning Musharraf to Pakistan from Sri Lanka was not allowed to land.

The army takeover had already begun when the aircraft carrying the army chief was denied landing rights, apparently on the orders of Sharif. The pilot was reportedly told he had to fly the aircraft to another country.

The plane was kept in the air circling the country8217;s largest city, using up fuel until the army gained control of the Karachi airport and allowed the plane, carrying Musharraf and 200 passengers to land with barely 10minutes of fuel remaining.

Qureshi said no decision has been made about whether Sharif will be tried in military or civilian courts saying 8220;it will depend on the charges.8221; Qureshi dismissed those who would criticize the delay in elections saying 8220;grave areas of concern need to be put right 8230; a lot outside this country do not understand the ground realities in Pakistan.8221;

Foreign ministers called on the military regime in Islamabad asking to set up 8220;without delay8221; a time-frame for restoring democracy. But Qureshi said that won8217;t happen soon. 8220;We are not just interested in the label of democracy but we are interested in the substance8230;of a true democracy,8221; he said.
