
PHAGWARA, JUNE 1: The effigy of Pakistan prime minister Nawaz Sharif as well as the country8217;s flag were set alight by Shiv Sena activists here on Tuesday to protest the Pakistan-backed intrusion in Kargil.
About 200 Shiv Sainiks, led by Punjab State Secretary Pawan Prabhakar, raised anti-Pakistan slogans, paraded the streets and later converged into a rally at Old Bus Chowk where they burnt the effigy and the flag.
Speakers at the rally flayed Pakistan for sponsoring the intrusion in Kargil and other sectors of Jammu and Kashmir. Those who addressed the gathering included Prabhakar, city Shiv Sena president Inderjit Karwal and Bharatiya Janata Party Press Secretary Arun Khosla.
Homage was paid to the officers and soldiers of the Indian Army and Air Force who were killed while repulsing the intruders. A brief silence was observed as a mark of respect.
The city unit of All India Rajiv Gandhi Brigade led by Gurjit Singh Walia also held a protest demonstration and burnt Sharif8217;s effigy and the Pakistani flag at Gandhi Chowk here Monday night.
