AUGUST 5: Sensex opened at 4669.78, touched the day8217;s high of 4688.89, fell below the 4600 mark to touch the day8217;s low of 4588.16 before closing at 4601.19, showing a net loss of 42.88 points from the previous close of 4644.07. The BSE-100 index Natex dropped by 18.23 points to 2018.20 against the previous close of 2036.43.

Brokers said software scrips attracted profit-taking at the higher level. Satyam, Software Solutions, Infosys Technologies and Tata Elxsi declined sharply on selling pressure. The market would witness a spurt in selling if the badla at the Calcutta Stock Exchange CSE turned out to be high as anticipated by market circles. Apart from Ranbaxy, other pharma shares like Glaxo, Sun Pharma, Cipla, Pfizer and Park Davis also shot up.

Of the 149 specified shares, 107 suffered sharp to moderate setbacks while 39 registered gains and three were well maintained. Only five out of 30 index-based scrips survived to close in positive territory. Satyam Computer clocked the highest turnover of Rs 297.47 crore of the total volume of business of Rs 2316.58 crore. Satyam Computer declined by Rs 43 to Rs 1840, Pentafour Software by Rs 55.75 to Rs 1335, Zee Telefilms by Rs 155 to Rs 2150, Hindustan Lever by Rs 19 to Rs 2741, ITC by Rs 8.10 to Rs 992.90, SBI by Rs 9.40 to Rs 239.50 and Tisco by Rs 5.15 to Rs 133.25.
