SURAT, Feb 18: A week-long agitation by students of the South Gujarat University in support of their demand for overall option in the final examination ended on a successful note when the Academic Council accepted the demand in its second meeting, having rejected it in the first.

The decision will entail 100 per cent option for students of Science, Arts and Commerce faculties. A few students had resorted to violence after the council had rejected the demand and damaged window panes and furniture at the administrative building last week.

The meeting lasted for more than a couple of hours, the time during which adequate police bandobast was maintained on the campus. The decision will allow Commerce and Arts students to choose any five questions from those numbered between 2 and 12. They will have to attempt the first objective question compulsorily. Science students will have to attempt any six of the 12 questions.

The council made it clear that the students8217; demand had been accepted in view of the exceptional situation arising out of the days lost when the city was flooded and when teachers agitated to press for more assessment remuneration.
