SURAT, Aug 18: The South Gujarat University8217;s Department of Rural Studies DRS, aided by Maitri Trust, a Gandhian and Sarvodaya organisation, have decided to provide a fellowship to young scholars who wish to complete a doctorate in Gandhian Thought. The fellowships will be provided to students of the Gandhian Study Centre that is part of the DRS in the SGU.

Department Head Prof D R Shah said on Wednesday that the Maitri trust, headed by Vipin Desai, had sponsored one student for fellowship studies at the department. The last date for sending in applications for the fellowship is September 15, Prof Shah said, adding that the candidate will be selected in October. The Maitri Trust has donated Rs 40,000 towards the fellowship, of which the candidate will be given Rs 3,000 per month and Rs 2000 will be separately allotted as contingency amount.

The Mahatma Gandhi post-graduate department of Rural Studies was set up in June 1970 with an aim of promoting higher rural education. It has since been training personnel in managing institutions in rural areas including agriculture, rural industries, and co-operatives, a department release issued here stated. It added that the department also plans to start a post-graduate diploma in co-operative management soon.
