Settlement panel branch in city

NEW DELHI, Sept 4: The government is considering establishing two more branches of the Settlement Commission in Delhi and Mumbai. This will bring down the cases pending for final settlement to four years, commission chairman NK Nayak said here on Friday in a meeting with the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

The commission which deals with tax liabilities delinked from the tax collecting machinery conducts its proceedings in a totally transparent manner. 8220;This commission is totally independent from the clutches of the administration of taxes,8221; he said.

The commission provides immunity from penalty and prosecution from all central taxes and not just the income tax.
