Only 4.27 per cent of candidates successful
Despite thousands of vacancies in colleges across the state, only 305 candidates have cleared the State Eligibility Test SET for college teachers.
More than 7,000 candidates appeared in the test conducted on July 20 this year, but the College Service Commission CSC failed to find a single suitable candidate in subjects like mathematics and geology. Only 4.27 per cent of the candidates came out successfully in the results declared on Friday.
8220;I am very disturbed with the results. Despite conducting the examination repeatedly, we are unable to find suitable candidates,8221; said Himanshu Sekhar Ghosh, Chairman, CSC.
8220;We lose our bright students to streams like engineering and medicine. Since the candidates appearing for the test are mediocre, the results are poor in science subjects,8221; Ghosh said.
The performance of candidates in other science subjects is also poor. While 11 candidates cleared in Life Sciences, only seven could make it in Physical Sciences.
The number of candidates qualifying in subjects like Bengali and History is comparatively high. 78 candidates have qualified in History and 31 in Bengali.
Of the 305 candidates, 86 candidates from the reserved category and 217 candidates from the general category have passed the examination.
8220;The commission is facing a shortage of candidates in reserved categories. Most of the vacancies are in SC and ST categories,8221; Ghosh said.
Last year, about 1,400 vacancies were reported to the commission, of which, 613 are in SC, 213 in ST and 158 are in OBC categories, the chairman added. The commission could fill only 600 posts because of the shortage of qualified candidates.
