As the probables for the Indian cricket team get started with the much-awaited fitness camp in Bangalore next month, the Board has planned to conduct two special one-dayers between teams featuring these 36 players, ahead of the all-important selection committee meeting on July 17.
8216;8216;The Board has planned these matches, and they will be played in Bangalore, naturally, where the Indian team8217;s camp is taking place8217;8217;, BCCI president Ranbir Singh Mahendra told The Indian Express today.
It8217;s not really a surprise, given the importance that Team India coach Greg Chappell has given to the fringe players. At his recent interaction with the selectors, he stressed on the importance of fringe players and asked to see as many as possible.
A national selector said that the reason behind conducting these warm-up matches in Bangalore was to provide sufficient match-practice to the probables, while at the same time, all the fine national selectors would gather there, along with Chappell, to have a look at how the players are faring.
It should not, he said, be seen as a platform for the selectors ahead of the selection meeting. 8216;8216;It8217;s a good move, since all the selectors will be there, and more importantly, Chappell will also have a good look at the 36 players in match-situations apart from the routine sessions at the camp8217;8217;, he said.
