The government is all set to form a committee that will select members of the Competition Commission of India CCI. The panel of experts, which is excpected to be formed within a week, will complete the selection process in three to four months, minister of corporate affairs Prem Chand Gupta said, adding, the CCI would be operational in second half of this year.

Speaking on the sidelines of first International Conference on Corporate Social Responsibility organised by Assocham, Gupta said, 8220;If everything goes well, the commission would be operational anytime during the second half of this year. It could start operations only after selection of member of CCI.8221;

Elaboarting on the members of the committee, Gupta said, 8220;Nitish Sengupta could one of two experts required for selection committee. There would be one more expert on the panel. The committee would be headed by Chief Justice of India. The other two members would be secretary, law and justice and secretary, corporate affairs.8221;

About much awaited New Companies Bill, Gupta assured that it would be tabled before Parliament during this Budget session as all consultation processes are completed by the ministry.

Once the commission is operational, Monopolies and Restrictive Trade Practices Commission MRTPC would not admit any case. As per the sunset clause, MRTPC would have to settle all cases pending before it in a two-year time. The Competition Commission Amendment Bill was passed by Parliament last year. The apex court had raised objections to earlier competition law.
