With Indian Airlines CMD Sunil Arora completing his five-year tenure this weekend, the Civil Aviation Ministry has written to the Cabinet Secretary to set up a search committee that will shortlist names for the post.

As the process could take up to three weeks, the ministry has recommended that the senior-most official in the organisation assumes charge in the interim. Deputy Managing Director Sushma Chawla, who also looks after the airline’s finance department is the senior-most official and is expected to take over from Arora on June 13.

Arora has been credited with guiding the airline through troubled times and pulling it out of the red in the face of stiff competition from Jet Airways and Air Sahara. Prior to joining IA, he was a joint secretary in the civil aviation ministry and was responsible in implementing a new set of security guidelines after the IC-814 hijack.

He is now expected to return to his cadre, Rajasthan. But the state is still to inform him of his new assignment. IA’s $1.9 billion fleet acquisition plan is under circulation with other ministries prior to being placed before the CCEA for approval.

IA plans to acquire 43 Airbus aircraft, which includes 19 Airbus 319s for Alliance Air. The airline also plans to start operations to Manchester and Birmingham this winter for which it is busy trying to lease wide-bodied aircraft.
