What is a good score in JEE Main 2026?

With increasing competition from previous years and changes in cut-off scores year to year, understanding the definition of a good score for JEE is essential to help guide you in setting the proper benchmark to prepare for the test.

JEE Main 2026: What is a good score in JEE Main?Cut-off scores are steadily increasing. As such, the growth rate of both competition and participation in JEE Advanced has increased steadily.

One question every JEE aspirant taking JEE Main 2026 asks: How well will you perform on the test tomorrow? How you answer this question will help determine whether you gain admission to an NIT, IIIT, GFTI, or go on to qualify for JEE Advanced. With increasing competition from previous years and changes in cut-off scores year to year, understanding the definition of a good score for JEE is essential to help guide you in setting the proper benchmark to prepare for the test.

JEE Main 2026: Difference between marks and percentiles

Students generally talk about the number of marks achieved out of a total of 300; however, the National Testing Agency does not use raw scores when calculating a student’s score (where a student places) for the JEE Main. Instead, a percentile (0 – 100) is assigned for each of the sessions held on the test day. The best NTA percentile from all your attempts will be considered in determining your rank.

Why percentiles are more important than scores

Tests vary in difficulty with each session (so scores are not the same). Two students who score differently on the same exam can have the same percentile and therefore the same rank.

Colleges determine your admission to a college and branch as well as rank using solely your percentile (raw marks are not included). Therefore, the percentile will always be viewed as the best benchmark for determining a good score on the JEE Main examination.

Examination cut-off scores provide an idea of how tough the examination is, like the competition. We can consider a glance at 2023’s cut-off score of JEE Advanced for candidates from the General (UR) category:

Approximately 88.41 percentile in 2022

Approximately 90.77 percentile in 2023

Approximately 93.23th percentile (maximum of five years) in 2024

Approximately the 93.10th percentile in 2025

Cut-off scores are steadily increasing. As such, the growth rate of both competition and participation in JEE Advanced has increased steadily. The increasing availability of study resources and information on how to prepare for the examination has directly impacted how many more individuals and groups have successfully passed; therefore, cut-off scores have risen, and to date continue to rise.

JEE Main 2026 good score

Using data, trends from the past and counselling data, plus expert analysis, the following is a reasonable calculation of what would likely be considered a good score (by percentile) for general category students.

Minimum JEE Advanced Qualification Score – 94 to 95 Percentile (JEE Main)

Given that the past several years have seen cut-off scores ranging from 88 to 93%, it is a good idea to have a slightly higher goal of 94 to 95 percentiles, as this will allow for a cushion above 2026’s expected cutoff point. A score of 94 to 95 percentiles is also a strong enough score to enable the student to easily get in.

To get into an NIT/IIIT/GFTI – 95 to 98 percentile

This range is ideal if you wish to pursue the following. The core branches of Mechanical, Civil, and Chemical at the newer NITs

–Good branches at IIITs

–The best opportunities are through home-state quotas. You can expect to receive multiple options for colleges based on your State and your Category.

CSE/ECE/EE – Top NITs – Aim for 98.5+ Percentile

Students pursuing highly competitive branches like CSE at NIT Trichy, Surathkal, and Warangal; IIIT Hyderabad, IIIT Allahabad, typically will need to achieve 98.5+ percentile; however, a 99+ will increase their options substantially, with this being consistently ranked as the secure zone for top branches at premier NITs.

A rank of 99-99.5+ percentile is required to rank in the top few thousand in the country, which means you will have multiple options available to you as one of the top candidates for CSE and ECE at the best NITs, as well as a good chance of getting into prestigious institutes through rank-based admission processes like IIIT Hyderabad and IIIT Bangalore.

A high ranking in the JEE will provide an exceptional foundation for JEE Advanced. The precise number of marks you will need to score to achieve the required percentile will change from one year to the next, depending on how difficult the question paper was. However, it is safe to estimate that for a moderately difficult paper, a 99-99.5 percentile candidate would typically score 200+ marks.

Strategic points to consider for JEE Main 2026 candidates

1. Set a good score based on your desired target.

For JEE Advanced Target: 97% or higher.

For NITs (top): 98.5–99% or higher.

For other good engineering schools: 95% or higher.

2. Percentiles are more important than marks since every exam is conducted differently, making marks misleading. Your percentile shows how you rank relative to others who took the same test.

3. Create a safety zone by setting your goals at least 2 to 3 per cent higher than the previous cutoff for your category.

4. Be consistent during all test attempts. Having strong fundamentals, taking regular mock tests, and revising strategically typically outweighs efforts to reach perfection.
