Remember the accident in which 30 school children drowned in the Yamuna, in New Delhi. Had the people at the accident spot been aware of the basic life saving techniques, these kids could have been saved. Such water-related tragedies can be avoided, affirms Rear Admiral P.D. Sharma Retd. The Rashtriya Life Saving Society RLSS launched by Sharma, under the aegis of the Indian Maritime Foundation IMF aims to train people to do just that. The idea is to teach effective life saving drills in water by way of educational programmes in areas of water safety, swimming, life-saving, life-guarding, life-support and resuscitation.
8220;I carry the life-saving kit with me where ever I go, as I am ready to give a demonstration anytime, anywhere,8221; says Sharma. He has successfully conducted courses at the Army School of Physical Training, the Armed Forces Medical College and the Royal Connaught Boat Club. Unfortunately the response has not been overwhelming from the Puneites. That doesn8217;t deter Sharma. 8220;Even if there are only a handful of people who want to learn the life-saving techniques, I will teach them, because I sincerely feel that every individual is a potential life saver,8221; he says.
