When Satyadev Prasad takes his position on Thursday morning in the round of 8, his best hope will be to keep his mental focus and follow the ‘Leander Paes example’. So says Limba Ram, India’s best archer of the past two decades.

‘‘If there’s one athlete I admire totally, it is Leander Paes. He will cheer every Indian participating, but when it comes to his event, all you will get is a quiet ‘hello’ and he will get in with the job. Before his event, he goes away from everyone, keeps absolutely quiet. And that’s why he is still going on, doing well, after all these years,’’ Limba says.

That, he says, is what ‘Sattu’ needs to do. Limba feels that since the first couple of rounds are over, the excuse that the breeze is playing havoc can’t be used anymore.

‘‘Yes, the archers are having problems. You can see that even on TV. But now he must have gotten used to it. Now he just needs to concentrate and deliver. The competition is tough, but then what do you expect?’’

About his experience of training with Satyadev for the past few seasons, Limba says, ‘‘He really benefitted from the international coach we had till last year, Korea’s Chae Woong Lim. Sometimes he takes too much time to shoot, but that’s not a problem in the individual event. He is very consistent and when he concentrates properly, he shoots very well.’’

Talking about how different the scene was when he was at his peak, and how the national ranking meets every month have helped improve the standards immensely, Limba says that if he could return to his best form, he might have been able to hit the medal range at Athens.

‘‘But, I can’t go and shoot for Sattu and neither can you. We can tell him that the breeze needs to be countered, but he must know it. He has to figure out how to stop his heartbeat and breath for that split second when he lets go of the arrow.’’

If he can, ‘‘sure, he can do well’’. ‘‘He has a very good chance, and has nothing to lose. He has to do it now,’’ Limba signs off.
