At a time when it is smarting from its low Lok Sabha poll tally, the Election Commission today dealt another blow to the BJP, saying its senior leader Lalji Tandon had indeed violated the model code of conduct by distributing sarees in Lucknow which resulted in a stampede that killed 22 women and children.

In a strongly-worded note to the BJP, the EC said that it disapproved of the distribution of sarees at the function held to celebrate Tandon8217;s birthday, but added that it did not wish to pursue the matter as the BJP had assured it would abide by the model code of conduct.

8216;8216;The Commission is of the view that the distribution of sarees on April 12, 2004, when the election process in the Lucknow parliamentary constituency had already been set in motion, was a violation of the model code of conduct,8217;8217; the EC order said. It, however, added that in view of the BJP8217;s 8216;8216;full commitment to the compliance of the model code of conduct and the electoral laws in letter and spirit, the Commission does not wish to pursue the matter further, except to state that it strongly disapproves of such violations of the model code of conduct8217;8217;.

But what has intrigued many is the fact that the Commission had to wait for the election results to be announced to admonish the BJP.
