Sania Mirza beat Russian Yaroslava Shvedova in straight sets to reach the second round of women’s singles in Wimbledon tennis championship here today.
The Indian, ranked 44 in the world now, needed less than an hour to trounce her rival 6-0, 6-3. Sania now faces a tough task in the second round where she is pitted against another Russian, 11th seed Nadia Petrova.
Petrova thrashed unseeded American Vania King 6-0, 6-1 in her first-round match.
Sania’s best in Wimbledon so far has been a second-round loss in 2005, the year she burst on to the international scene.
The hallowed green of the All-England Club saw the relatively unknown Indian, who had caught the attention in the Australian Open, get past Akiko Morigami in the first round, only to see her running into Russian Svetlana Kuznetzova and bow out in the second round. Last year, however, another Russian proved to be her nemesis, when she was shown the door by Elena Dementieva in the first round itself.
