If all goes well, Sania Mirza may well be back in action sometime next month. However, much would depend on how the Hyderabadi shapes up over the next few weeks.
On Monday, six weeks since Sania suffered a cruciate ligament injury on her right knee while playing against Italy8217;s Romina Oprandi in the Qatar Open, the 20-year-old turned out at the SAAP Tennis Complex for a 8220;practice trial.8221;
Sania8217;s father Imran Mirza told The Indian Express, 8220;It basically was a confidence rebuilding session. Sania was satisfied and needed a few more of these sessions,8221; Imran added, 8220;She hit a few balls and went through a couple of service motions.8221;
While Imran obviously seemed concerned, he added that Sania had been strictly warned of not going overboard, 8220;She8217;s eager, but at the same time worried,8221; Imran opined and revealed that she did complain of a slight niggling pain after the work-out.
With a strict 8220;no8221; with regard to stretching herself fully, it was learnt that Sania8217;s South African trainer Heath Mathew has worked out a training schedule which includes a week of light training before she decides when to prop up the vigours. 8220;Aggravating the injury would be the last thing Sania and we would want8221; Imran added.
With sights set on either the Tier I German Open on May 7 or the Tier IV Morocco event on May 14, it appears as if Morocco, where the field is likely to be weak, is the place Sania will choose for her return.
India down Jordan
Pune: India8217;s Fed Cup Asian Oceania Group 1 campaign has so far been a statistical delight. If Shikha Uberoi8217;s record of becoming the fourth Indian player to log ten wins apart laced the open day, Tuesday saw India record their second-best Fed Cup result since starting off in 1977.
For the second successive day India walked off the Scenic Circles Tennis Centre in Christchurch logging a 3-0 scoreline. While the 3-0 scoreline was the sixteenth instance by India, a close look at the scores revealed a single game lost in the entire tie. ENS
