US President Donald Trump has invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to join the “Board of Peace”, the committee which will oversee the reconstruction of Gaza, a Kremlin spokesperson said on Monday.

Speaking to reporters, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said, “President Putin also received through diplomatic channels an invitation to join this Board of Peace.” Peskov added that the Kremlin is reviewing the invitation from Washington and “hoping to get more details from the US side.”

Trump’s Board of Peace, a new body which is meant to look after the next steps in war-torn Gaza, shows ambitions for a broader mandate in global affairs. The board is being seen as a key step in the United Nations-backed Washington plan to demilitarize the territory and rebuild Gaza, which has been ravaged by a two year war between Israel and militant group Hamas.

The committee is poised to include former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. It has been described as the “the greatest and most prestigious Board ever assembled” by the US president.

Among the list of countries that have received invitations by the White House include India, Pakistan, Turkey, Argentina, Egypt, Hungary, Vietnam, Jordan, Greece, Cyprus, Australia.

As per the charter which hasn’t been made public, a $1 billion contribution is required to secure a permanent membership on the Trump-led board instead of a three-year appointment, which has no contribution requirement, AP reported quoting a US official. The official added that the money raised would go into rebuilding Gaza.

In the letter sent on Friday by the White House to world leaders, Trump invited them to be “founding members,” and said the Board of Peace would “embark on a bold new approach to resolving global conflict.”

The letter highlighted that the UN Security Council has endorsed Trump’s 20-point Gaza peace plan, which includes the board’s creation.
