
Former Lok Sabha Speaker and NCP8217;s chief minister candidate Purno Agitok Sangma and his two sons filed their nomination papers on Thursday for the Assembly elections in Meghalaya.
While senior Sangma will contest from the prestigious Tura Assembly seat, his sons, James K Sangma and Conrad K Sangma, have filed papers for the Ronchugiri and Selsella constituencies respectively. The senior Sangma decided to return to Meghalaya politics last year and said that he would like to provide the much-needed political leadership to the state. He was Meghalaya Chief Minister from 1988 to 1990, but later shifted to national politics after he was dislodged by regional party leader late B B Lyngdoh.
8220;I am confident to win the election and lead Meghalaya for a change,8221; Sangma told reporters. He has never lost a single election ever since he contested for the Tura Lok Sabha seat in 1977.
In a triangular contest, Sangma will be pitted against sitting Independent MLA Billykid Sangma and sitting member of Garo Hills Autonomous District Council John Leslee Sangma. Sangma8217;s eldest son James will be pitted against his own maternal uncle and sitting MLA Beckstar K Sangma, who had contested from Ronchugiri constituency as an NCP candidate in 2003, but defected to the Congress along with five others. The youngest son Conrad, who is an IT expert, had contested a by-election two years ago from Selsella constituency but lost.
8220;This time, I am confident of winning the seat,8221; he said.
