Durand Cup champions Salgaocar SC of Goa, on a high after beating defending NFL champions East Bengal, thrashed another Kolkata club — debutants Mohammedan Sporting — 3-0 today at the Nehru Stadium in Fatorda, to go atop the 8th National Football League table.
The final score could have been a major embarassment for the Sporting side, but the winners missed sitter after sitter in the first half. All the three goals came in the second half, through Bello Rasaq (59th), Samson Singh (77th) and Felix Ibrebru (89th).
With this win, Salgaocar reached six points from two consecutive wins, while Mohammedan suffered their second straight loss, and are yet to open their account.
After a barren first half, Salgoacar attacked the Sporting citadel with vigour in the second half, and went into the lead via a Rasaq header from a Jatin Bisht freekick. The Sporting defence was nowhere on the occasion, and Rasaq had a free header.
The home team found a second goal when Samson slammed a strong shot in from the right corner of the box, and then rounded off the tally a minute before the end through Abrebue.
