The stars were missing, but cheering and champagne welcomed the 121 passengers who landed in Colombo from Chennai today in the Air Sahara flight marking the first international operation of an Indian private carrier.
Earlier in the day, rumour gained ground that like Jet, the second domestic airlines to go international, Sahara would have filmstars from Mumbai aboard the first flight. There was also news that a South Indian film star would be joining the delegation at Chennai but the only dash of glamour came from Air Sahara CEO Uttam Kumar Bose who joined in with a battery of officials at Chennai.
Brand ambassador Aishwarya Rai also decided to stay away from the event, even as her life-size posters generously dotted the airports both at Chennai and Colombo. And while celebrations quite didn’t pick up on the flight itself, it was partners Jetwings that threw in cake and champagne at the Colombo airport.
But the beginning was not without the glitches — flight delays, short time for transit from the domestic terminal at Chennai to the International, lack of information from the PR company C Cube and the airline officials. But Bose had a promise: ‘‘This is just the beginning. We will be starting flights to Nepal, Bangladesh and Maldives in April and then extend operations to the rest of the world.’’ ‘‘Our USP is that we have constantly innovated,’’ Bose said.
